During the War of 1812, the term "rifleman" designated a marksman with a rifled long arm boasting far more range and accuracy than an infantryman's musket. Elizabeth City County riflemen under Capt. Richard B. Servant may have worn hats like this when they stunned the British advance on Hampton with fire from their Rutherford Rifles.
