Community announcements: A race, soccer & Boy Scouts

Bobby Stewart race

The 4th annual Bobby Stewart 5k and 8k Run/Walk will be held on Saturday at Williams Wharf Landing in Mathews. The junior 1-mile fun run will begin at 9:15 a.m., the 5k race at 10 a.m. and the 8k race at 10:15 a.m.  The 8k race is part of the Williams Wharf race series.

Proceeds will benefit the Gloucester-Mathews Free Clinic and Ware Academy's education opportunities. The fees are $25 for the 5k and $30 for the 8k. The junior 1-mile fun run is $10 and i'ts free for ages 10 and under.

Finish line results and race support will be provided by the Peninsula Track Club and PTC race passes are accepted. The course has been revised to mirror Williams Wharf's 5k and 8k routes.

Cub Scout Pack 113

Cub Scout Pack 113 has started the 2011 scouting season. The boys meet on the last Friday of each month at 7 p.m. at Bethany United Methodist Church, said parent Debbie Briscoe. The boys have a great year planned that's full of many exciting adventures, she said. For information on Cub Scout Pack 113, contact Claudia at 815-8230.

Marine Corps League

The Devil Pups Marine Corps League Soccer Festival will be held at Ark Park from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. featuring youth teams from Gloucester Parks, Recreation & Tourism. The tournament will feature seven teams, consisting of approximately 90 youth. Marines from the Fast Company stationed at Yorktown will be at the tournament with an armored vehicle.

On Nov. 11 is the Veterans Day ceremony at the the Gloucester County Courthouse at 1 p.m. Lt. Brian Shearer, a Navy chaplain stationed at Naval Weapons Station Yorktown, and Marine Corps Col. Peter H. Devlin will be participating. A 21-gun salute, the playing of "Taps" and the folding of a flag to be presented to a widow of a deceased veteran from American Legion Post #75 in Gloucester will mark the ceremony.
