The Umoja Festival, held Friday Sept. 16 through Sunday Sept. 18 at Olde Towne Portsmouth's nTelos amphitheater, honors the region's African-American heritage. It features music, history tours, kids activities, art and food. The festival's name is the Kiswahili for unity, so it's appropriate that events are free with the exception of Saturday's concert by R&B acts Tank with Ledisi and Avant. Tickets to that concert are $20 to $47 from Ticketmaster. For more on the festival, visit www.umojafestportsmouth.com or call 393-8481.
