Attack on Craney Island

This contemporary image by Gerry Embleton depicts Capt. John Martin Hanchette with an open umbrella aboard the British barge Centipede during the unsuccessful June 22, 1813 attack on Craney Island. Some accounts describe Hanchette as drinking champagne and eating strawberries to show his contempt of the Americans, who drove him back with a serious wound and captured his barge.
