House and Senate military budget writers have agreed on a $633 billion defense authorization bill that in some cases goes beyond Pentagon suggested spending levels for programs.
Perhaps most significantly to Hampton Roads (and southeastern Connecticut), House and Senate conferees restored funding for construction of a second Virginia-class attack submarine in 2014 that had been stripped from the president's budget request.
The nuclear-powered subs are built through a joint production agreement by Newport News Shipbuilding and Electric Boat in Groton, Conn.
The conference report also ensures a two-submarine a year production rate through 2018.
Enterprise pre-construction funding boost.
The Navy on Thursday approved a contract modification that adds $33.7 million to a contract for "advance planning efforts to prepare and make ready for the defueling and inactivation of the USS Enterprise."
According to a brief description of the modification posted late Thursday on the Pentagon's website, The change covers work performed in Norfolk, where the carrier is currently docked and in Newport News where it will be tugged next year.Copyright © 2015, CT Now
