A handful of locations in Fairfield County to eat Sunday brunch.
Bloodroot
85 Ferris St., Bridgeport
576-9168
Poached Eggs on Creamed Spinach, $8.50
Bloodroot, the all-vegetarian (with vegan options) feminist bookstore and restaurant, celebrated its 30th anniversary last week, and its Sunday brunch showed why it’s known for comfort food: included were a flavor-packed tofu scramble, a fluffy short stack served with real maple syrup, the spicy and delectable soysage patty, organic salads, fresh quiche, and just-made cherry scones. The poached eggs were served over rich creamed spinach with a medley of house-made breads spread with real butter.
Gates Restaurant
10 Forest St., New Canaan
966-8666
Huevos Rancheros, $9.95
Gates’ brunch takes into account that on a Sunday you are at best very hungry, and at worst, extremely hungover. It starts with buttery warm croissants that come with berry-accented sweet butter. Fresh-squeezed OJ or grapefruit juice seems a healthy cure after that, and then comes your main course. The huevos rancheros is topped with plenty of fresh avocado, and underneath is a layer of cheese covering salsa, two fried eggs nestled over refried beans, and beneath that, a crispy corn tortilla. Thick fries come on the side.
River House Tavern
299 Riverside Ave., Westport
226-5532
French Toast, $12
River House Tavern’s entire dining room (and most of the bar) has a great view of the Saugatuck River. The New England–style brunch starters include conch fritters, shiitake mushroom toasts, and seafood and corn chowder. Main courses range from eggs Benedict, a caramelized apple crepe with crème fraiche, and seasonal fruit and granola with lavender honey. The thick French toast has a crunchy exterior and a soft middle packed with raisins and topped with candied walnuts. Warm maple syrup and thick slabs of Canadian bacon rounded it out.
The Brewhouse
13 Marshall St., Norwalk
853-9110
Buffet Brunch, $24.95
Fast before going to the Brew-house’s Sunday brunch. Start with a complimentary mimosa or Bloody Mary, and consider ordering a personal omelette. Then mosey to the overflowing buffet table for standards like bacon, sausage and made-while-you-watch waffles with toppings. Or, dive into giant plates of fresh shrimp cocktail, penne a la vodka, crab-stuffed sole, spinach salad, and tomato and mozzarella. Then there’s a table piled high with desserts, from petit fours to sticky cinnamon rolls, when you come back for seconds (or fourths).
The Black Duck
605 Riverside Ave., Westport
227-7978
Cheezy Eggs, $6
The Black Duck’s brunch is like its décor (it’s an 1840s barge on the Saugatuck River) and its beer—unpretentious. The most expensive entree on the a la carte brunch menu is a 10 ounce “Flat Iron” steak and three eggs cooked to order for $12.50, but you can go for the cheesy eggs for five bucks, served with some seriously hearty hash browns, if you’re on a budget. Bloody Marys and mimosas are only four bucks a pop, but if you’re feeling expansive, try the Duck’s “Tail Mary,” an extra-large Bloody rimmed with fresh jumbo shrimp.

Where's your favorite place to have brunch in CT?
The Roger Sherman Inn, Great Menu ,crabcakes to die for. Very cozy, and the waiters and Maitre'd
are very accomodating.

My personal favorites are Splash in Westport (golf course, water - how can you top that? THE best food - don't miss the calamari salad), The Greenwich Hyatt (VERY pricey, over the top selection - the tropical atrium is gorgeous), Watersedge (beautiful setting & great food)& Simsbury Inn.
