You may think that Gridlock Grille is an unrefined name for an eatery, but if the number of cars in the parking lot is any indication, there is no gridlock keeping away fans of this restaurant.

Their house specialty is lobster dinners and they claim to have the best prices in the New London area. In honor of their close proximity to the Coast Guard Academy, you order the size of your crustacean according to the vessel that best reflects its rank in the tank. The U.S.C.G. Barque Eagle is a 5-pounder. The Super Tanker is a 2½-pounder. The Cabin Cruiser is about a pound-and-a half.

Another big seller is their boneless prime rib, and you order this as if you were renting a car. The luxury cut is 20 ounces. Mid-size comes in at 16 ounces and the compact cut is 10 ounces.

Their "Landlocked" menu offers everything from liver and onions and center cut pork chops, to St. Louis barbecued ribs. The "Oceanlocked" section lists whole belly clams, New England cod cakes and fresh broiled swordfish, among a host of other choices.

Their salad and sandwich menu is extensive, and you'll find five varieties of potato skins, fried stuffed olives and spinach artichoke dip among the appetizers.

The kid's menu includes 11 entrees, including ravioli, grilled-cheese sandwiches and clam strips. Most meals come with fries, beverage and applesauce.


Hours: Sunday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Breakfast is served until 2 p.m.
