Success breeds success.
Puerto Vallarta in Newington is one of three Connecticut restaurants of the same name owned by the Rodriguez family. The newest location is in Middletown. The older ones are in West Hartford and Newington. All share the same menu and the decor is similar.
The brothers Rodriguez come from Union de Tula, a small town near Puerto Vallarta, a Mexican resort town.
We began our lunch with black bean soup, a chilled version with tortilla strips, sour cream, tomato, cilantro and lime. Fajitas, a main course offered with chicken, beef or shrimp, or combinations of all three, is served sizzling with sauteed onions, green peppers and a side dish of pico de gallo, sour cream, guacamole, rice, corn or flour tortillas and refried or Rancho (cholesterol-free) beans.
Combination platters of enchiladas, tostadas, tacos, chile rellenos and burritos come with beans and coleslaw. Huevos Rancheros, a hearty breakfast choice, is served all hours.
More adventuresome dishes include chicken mole (the sauce is a combination of spicy peanut butter and chocolate) and pollo poblano with peppers, chocolate, spices and fresh apples.
Takeout orders are accepted.
Hours: Open Sun.-Thurs. 11 a.m.-10:30 p.m. and Fri. & Sat. 11 a.m.-11 p.m.
