Marlborough Tavern Is Cozy Eatery

We frequent the Marlborough Tavern for that cozy, New England hometown feel -- where you're more than likely to run into one of your neighbors.

While we've eaten in the tavern's dining room, we prefer the taproom, with its long wood-paneled bar, cozy tables, dim lighting, friendly wait staff and TVs for watching sports.

The vibe: Chill out and relax in the rustic taproom or enjoy a quiet, romantic dinner in the dining room. It's casual and kid-friendly (there is a children's menu). The Marlborough Tavern also offers karaoke and comedy shows.

The eats: The usual pub food with some nice specials. Our two favorite appetizers are potato skins ($8.50) and chicken fingers with fries ($9.50). The chicken fingers are plump pieces of white meat, lightly breaded and served with a delicious, creamy honey mustard sauce. And while I'm not a big fan of steak fries, I liked these, perfectly crisp on the outside and soft on the inside.

The club sandwich is a nice change of pace from the usual burger. You can order it with turkey, ham, roast beef or grilled chicken (our favorite).

Other sandwiches offered in the taproom include a classic Reuben, a grilled tuna melt and, of course, the tavern burger. Salads include a chicken pecan, Cajun chicken and a colonial cobb.

On one of our Thursday night visits a "Cue Ball Willy's Chicken Festival" special was featured with chicken marsala over fettuccine and chicken cordon bleu (both were $15.99).

The dessert menu looks great, although we have yet to try anything (we're too stuffed after our meals). But one day we plan on trying Peter's fried peanut butter and jelly sandwich à la mode.

The prices: The prices in the taproom are quite affordable (the dining room entrées are a little more expensive). Salads range from about $5 (house salad) to $15 (mixed greens with steak, chicken or shrimp); appetizers about $4 to $10; and sandwiches $7 to $12.

The verdict: Very tasty.

The particulars: Open seven days a week. Opens at 11:30 a.m. for lunch; Sunday brunch at 11:30 a.m.

The dining room closes at 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and at 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. The taproom is open later.

Hours: Lunch Mon.-Sat., 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Brunch Sun., 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Dinner Daily, 5 p.m.-9 p.m. Lounge remains open until 1 a.m.
