Maintenence personnel investigating a leak in an apartment discovered a marijuana growing operation and a cache of weapons, including an AK-47, which lead to two arrests Wednesday.
According to Middletown police, maintenence personnel at The Madison Apartments at Chestnut Hill on Town Colony Drive were investigating a water leak. They determined it was coming from the aparment directly above. Upon entering the upstairs apartment, they found a marijuana growing operation and several gun cases in one of the bedrooms. At that time, one of the residents, Elizabeth Clark, 24, came home, but did not have any explaination for what was found.
The building staff called police. Officers said the building staff observed Clark removing guns and a small amount of marijuana from the apartment and hide them in the woods behind the building. When police arrived on the scene they found two dry gun cases containing two assault rifles, a Colt AR-15, and an AK-47. They also found shopping bag containing three handguns, a Smith & Wesson .44 cal, a Taurus .45 cal, and a Walther .22 cal. and a small amount of marijuana, and a glass smoking pipe.
Clark was arrested and police said she told them she had contacted her roommates and asked them to come home.
Police said after obtaining a warrant, they found an elaborate grow room with several mature marijuana plants along with reflector walls, light ballasts, humidifiers, ventilation system with exhaust fans, irrigation system, temperature gauges, timers, bottles of liquid plant foods and minerals, and smoking pipes.
They also found two other handguns, a Ruger LCR .38 cal, and a Taurus 9 mm. The officers recovered a large amount of ammunition, including two 100 round drums for the assault rifles along with packaging equipment for the marijuana.
Cheryl Davitt, 28, was taken into custody when she arrived back at the complex.
Police requested a third resident, John Rose, 24, to return to the apartment but he refused and an arrest warrant for Rose was issued.
Elizabeth Clark was charged with possession, intent to sell, and cultivation of marijuana, operating a drug factory, possession of drug paraphernalia, tampering with evidence, reckless endangerment, carrying a pistol without a permit, and illegal possession of an assault weapon. She was held on $100,000 bond.
Cheryl Davitt was charged with possession of over 4 ounces of marijuana, possession of over 4 ounces of marijuana, possession with intent to sell over one kilo of marijuana, cultivation of marijuana, operating a drug factory and possession of drug paraphernalia. She was held on a $50,000.00 bond.
