My spiritual Cubs rebirth began around 5 p.m. Friday. Pat Hughes took the podium in front of a sea of Cubs fans and proceeded to introduce the Cubs alumni and legends in attendance, followed by the current players. Behind the players was a large curtain, and behind the curtain was the backstage area where the players congregated before being introduced. I hustled back there for the introductions, and was able to snap this picture of Kerry Wood, Ferguson Jenkins, Billy Williams, Ernie Banks and, yes, Todd Walker.
Yes, it seems odd to have Walker in a picture with three Hall of Famers and a man who once struck out 20 Astros, and while Walker¿s inclusion in the pic was due to the circumstances (I couldn¿t keep the curtain pulled open for too long and had to snap fast) I liked seeing him included. A professional sports team is about the role players as well as the stars, and part of the magic of the Cubs is that men like Walker feel strongly enough about their time here to want to remain in contact with the organization long after they've left.
