Pope Francis has a busy 5½ days in the United States with high-profile addresses (Congress and the United Nations), church functions, a World Meeting of Families and other events with poor and distressed groups that have become a hallmark of his approach to the papacy. Here is his schedule.

WASHINGTON

Sept. 22-24

Tuesday, Sept. 22

  • 4 p.m.: Arrives from Cuba.

Wednesday, Sept. 23

  • 9:15 a.m.: Welcoming ceremony, meets with President Barack Obama.
  • 11 a.m.: Parade along the Ellipse and the National Mall.
  • 11:30 a.m.: Prayer with U.S. bishops at St. Matthew's Cathedral.
  • 4:15 p.m.: Mass of Canonization of Junipero Serra, Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.

Thursday, Sept. 24

  • 9:20 a.m.: Joint meeting of Congress.
  • 11:15 a.m.: Visits St. Patrick in the City and Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington.
  • 4 p.m.: Leaves for New York.

  • 5 p.m.: Arrives in New York.
  • 6:45 p.m.: Evening prayer at St. Patrick's Cathedral.

Friday, Sept. 25

  • 8:30 a.m.:: Visits United Nations to address General Assembly.
  • 11:30 a.m.: Multireligious service at 9/11 Memorial and Museum, World Trade Center.
  • 4 p.m.: Visits Our Lady Queen of Angels School in East Harlem.
  • 5 p.m.: Procession through Central Park.
  • 6 p.m.: Mass at Madison Square Garden.

Saturday, Sept. 26

  • 8:40 a.m.:: Leaves for Philadelphia.

  • 7:30 p.m.: Visits the Festival of Families at Benjamin Franklin Parkway.

Sunday, Sept. 27

  • 9:15 a.m.:: Meets with bishops at St. Martin's Chapel, St. Charles Borromeo Seminary.
  • 11 a.m.: Visits a correctional facility.
  • 4 p.m.: Mass at the World Meeting of Families.
  • 7 p.m.: Visits with various events organizers.
  • 8 p.m.: Departs for Rome.
