1900: M'KINLEY IS AGAIN CHOSEN AS PRESIDENT: The Trib reported McKinley's victory with a bold, modern-looking results graphic running across the top of the page instead of a banner headline. In some of the largest type seen on news stories on the front page so far, not only McKinley's re-election but also Richard Yates'; victory in the Illinois gubernatorial race were shouted to readers. Clean charts detailed the electoral and popular votes from each state. When McKinley was assassinated in September 1901, Vice President Theodore Roosevelt became the nation's chief executive.
