A 37-year-old Joliet man will spend 60 days in jail after pleading guilty today to recording the film “Easy A” in a theater last year using a camera hidden in a pair of sunglasses.
Samuel Arnold, Jr. was identified after allegedly posting just-released films to two websites that illegally offered the films to paying customers, said Charles Pelkie, a spokesman for the Will County state’s attorney’s office.
“The allegation was that he was making money off of this,” he said.
After the Motion Picture Association of America identified Arnold through his Internet-service provider, they alerted the Cinemark theater at the Westfield Louis Joliet Shopping Mall to be on the watch for him. When Arnold bought a ticket last year to a showing of “Easy A”, theater employees contacted the MPAA and Joliet police, Pelkie said.
Arnold was arrested by Joliet police after filming about 45 minutes of the Emma Stone riff on high-school life. Private investigators with the MPAA were also involved, Pelkie said.
