Woodridge trainer accused of sexual abuse of teen boy

A Woodridge fitness trainer has been accused of having sexual contact with a teenage boy, authorities said Wednesday.

Robert Theodore, 60, of the 3800 block of Hagen Court, was arrested Tuesday following a seven month investigation and charged with three counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, Naperville police said.

DuPage County prosecutors allege Theodore, a track/triathlon trainer at Life Time Fitness in Warrenville, had sexual contact with a boy who was then 16. They have accused Theodore of abusing the boy at a local gym, Theodore’s home and the teen’s home and said he bought gifts for the teen such as a specialized bicycle and iPod Touch.

Lifetime Fitness spokesman Jason Thunstrom said Theodore has been fired in the wake of the allegations and the company has begun an internal investigation in addition to working with law enforcement officials.

“The allegations themselves certainly are startling and I expect everybody would know Life Time is taking this seriously at the club level and the corporate level,” he said. “We are collaborating with local authorities to provide any information that may assist in their investigation.”

State’s Attorney Robert Berlin called the allegations “sickening.”

"The allegations against Mr. Theodore are sickening,” he said in a news release. “The relationship between an athlete and their trainer is built on trust and a desire to bring out the best in the athlete. It is alleged that through his actions, Mr. Theodore cared nothing about his young victim and destroyed the trust his victim had placed in him to satisfy his own despicable desires.”

Theodore posted the $25,000 required to be released from custody Wednesday morning. DuPage County Judge Elizabeth Sexton ordered him to submit to GPS monitoring and have no contact with the victim or anyone under the age of 18.

Theodore could not immediately be reached for comment. He is due back in court Oct. 15.

Anyone with further information is asked to contact Investigator Richard Wistocki at the Naperville Police Department at 630-305-5384 or the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office at 630-407-8000.
