A 32-year-old woman was killed and a man was injured late this morning in a two-vehicle crash near west suburban Maple Park.

About 11:50 a.m., Kane County sheriffs responded to a traffic crash near the intersection of Rt. 38 and Watson Road, according to a press release from the Kane County Sheriff's Office.

When they arrived, sheriffs found the drivers of two vehicles, a man and a woman, were injured.

Shanay Martin of Cortland, who was driving a 2000 Mercury Marquis, was taken to Delnor Hospital where she was pronounced dead. The other driver, who is 35 and from Maple Park, was taken to the same hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He was driving a 1987 Chevrolet pickup, the release said.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the Mercury was westbound on Rt. 38 east of Watson Road when it approached a line of cars that were stopped, waiting for a vehicle to turn south onto Watson Road, the release said.

The Mercury crossed over into oncoming traffic to avoid striking the last car that was stopped in the line. When it swerved, the Mercury struck the pickup that was eastbound on Rt. 38, the release said.

Route 38 between Meredith and Watson roads were closed while officials investigated.
