Woman charged in fatal Tinley Park accident

A 21-year-old woman has been charged in connection with an accident Saturday night in Tinley Park that killed one of the three passengers in her car.

Sarah Lavko, of the 11500 block of Keeler Avenue in Alsip, has been charged with reckless homicide and aggravated DUI, both felonies, and was also cited for improper lane usage, failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident, transportation of alcohol and no proof of insurance, according to a media release from the Tinley Park Police Department today.

Preliminary tests found that Lavko’s blood-alcohol level was .197 percent, more than twice the legal limit of .08, said Cook County state's attorney's spokesman Andy Conklin.

The accident occurred about 11:30 p.m. Saturday night in the 6200 block of 183d Street. Four people were in a 2008 Pontiac G6 that left the road and rolled over several times, police said. One of the vehicle’s four occupants was ejected and one of the four, 18-year-old Megan Elam of Alsip, was killed.

Two of the three surviving passengers remain hospitalized, police said in today's release. The driver, Lavko, had her bail set at $150,000 in a bond hearing this afternoon at the Bridgeview branch of the Circuit Court of Cook County, police said.
