Stepfather charged with murder in Woodstock stabbing death

The stepfather of a 34-year-old Woodstock man stabbed to death over the weekend has been charged with murder, officials said.

Victor M. Lopez, 46, is being held at the McHenry County jail on a charge of first-degree murder in the slaying of Mark A. Medina, of Woodstock, according to a release from Woodstock police.

Police were called to the 1900 block of Sheila Street at 4:37 p.m. Saturday in the far northwestern suburb police said over the weekend. They found Medina with puncture wounds to his upper torso and to have been dead for some time before police arrived.

Investigators determined Medina and Lopez had been involved in a dispute that ended with Lopez stabbing Medina in the chest, police said in a news release today.

Preliminary findings from an autopsy conducted Sunday determined that Medina died of multiple stab and incised wounds to his chest and upper body, said Majewski. Results from a toxicology exam are pending, Majewski said.

Police originally said only that "circumstances surrounding the death of this individual were deemed to be suspicious." Today police said in a release that Lopez had been “quickly identified as a suspect and taken into custody” at a family member’s home in the 1900 block of Sheila Street in Woodstock, next door to where Medina was killed, soon after police began their investigation.

Lopez had been injured before his arrest and was taken to a hospital before being transferred to the McHenry County jail, police said.

The major investigation assistance team was activated to help with the ongoing investigation.
