"Monty Python's Spamalot" ★★★★

You wouldn't expect the venerable Drury Lane, with its irony-free decor, to be a natural home for migrating swallows, killer rabbits and all the rest of the nomenclature of Monty Python. But William Osetek's knockout new production of "Spamalot," the 2005 Broadway musical loosely adapted from the cult movie "Monty Python and the Holy Grail," overachieves a lot. A whole lot. Osetek and his mostly Chicago-based bunch of ironists — who lend a kind of Chicago-style naturalism and insecure earnestness to the hilarious proceedings — nail that famous Python tone to a wall. Rest assured this new local version gives the full Idle monty for your money. In fact, the only diminishment from the original Broadway production is the ticket price.
