A 26-year-old Riverdale man died after he fell into the Chicago River in the Goose Island neighborhood after stepping off a boat, officials said.
The accident happened at 9:21 p.m. on the 900 block of North Kingsbury Avenue at the Chicago River, officials said.
Brian Garland, of the 14100 block of South Wabash Avenue, was pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital at 4:14 a.m., according to a spokeswoman with the Cook County medical examiner's office.
Garland was on a boat with other people when he stepped off the boat with three people onto a wooden dock when he stumbled and fell into the river, officials said.
The boat's driver jumped into the river to get the man but was not successful, officials said.
The Chicago Police marine unit, U.S. Coast Guard and Fire department officials responded. The man was pulled from the river and taken by paramedics to Northwestern in critical condition where he later died, officials said.
