Q: How can I tell if bouquets of roses on sale are worth buying? --Joe Cusano, Wheeling A: See if the roses have rich color, one or two petals that are already loosened, and sepals (the smaller, green outer "petals") that are turned down around the stem. Unless you only need them for a short time, try to avoid buying roses when most or all of the petals are already loosened. It's also best to avoid buying roses that may never bloom because they were cut too soon. The buds of these roses will look tightly wound and feel hard, and the protective sepals will be wrapped tightly around the bud.
