July 30, 1982: Diane Bates stares at some of the 5,000 dead fish near the Lakeside Apartments in Lisle while John Kelly, 7, and Ted Knight, 6, put out their fishing rods to see if any fish are still alive. Jack Barnett, an Illinois Environmental Protection Agency specialist, speculated that heavy rains may have washed weed-killers or other lawn chemicals into the lake, or there may have been a chemical spill from a passing truck. He said tests ruled out a simple drop in the lake's oxygen level.
