A pedestrian was struck and killed by a Burlington Northern freight train in La Grange this afternoon, causing delays for Metra trains that use the same tracks, officials said.

La Grange Police Chief Michael A. Holub said the incident was an apparent suicide. The person was struck around 1 p.m. at Stone Avenue.

Inbound and outbound trains on Metra's Burlington Northern Santa Fe line were delayed. Inbound train No. 1268, scheduled to arrive in Chicago at 3:47 p.m., ran between 40 and 50 minutes late.
