Pedestrian, 80, dies a day after being struck on North Side

An 80-year-old man was pronounced dead Friday night from injuries he suffered when he was struck by a van Thursday morning in the city's Lakeview neighborhood.

About 8:45 a.m. Thursday, according to preliminary information, the man was struck near Ashland and Wellington avenues, said Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Jose Estrada.

A 50-year-old man who was driving a 2006 Kia van attempted to stop but couldn't in time. Witness statements were consistent with what the van's driver said.

The 80-year-old man, identified as Jamie Ramirez, was taken in critical condition to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 8:38 p.m. Friday, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
