Daley's triumph in his second bid for the nomination made him an early favorite to win the April 4 general election that chose Chicago's fifth mayor since the late <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="PEHST002288" title="Richard J. Daley" href="/topic/politics/richard-j.-daley-PEHST002288.topic">Mayor Richard J. Daley</a>'s 21-year reign ended in death in 1976.
