Maggie Daley and her mayoral candidate husband Richard M. Daley greet supporters in February 1989 after voting in the mayoral primary election. Daley, the scion of one political legend, went on to win the Democratic nomination for mayor as Mayor Eugene Sawyer failed to re-create the electoral mystique of another legend, the late Mayor Harold Washington. Daley's triumph in his second bid for the nomination made him an early favorite to win the April 4 general election that chose Chicago's fifth mayor since the late Mayor Richard J. Daley's 21-year reign ended in death in 1976.
