Ilulissat, Greenland

Ilulissat, Greenland was listed in 2004 as a UNESCO World Heritage Site because the small town is next to the most active glacier in the Northern Hemisphere. In winter and summer, giant icebergs float in Disko Bay. The town has 4,600 residents and about 3,500 sled dogs and can only be reached by plane or boat. The sun this far north casts a golden light over the homes. Ellen Creager, McClatchy-Tribune
