A man who was beaten to death and left lying in Washington Park Saturday morning on the South Side was identified this afternoon, officials said.
Allen Ross, 26, of the 6100 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue, was pronounced dead Saturday morning at the University of Chicago Hospitals, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
Ross was found about 6 a.m. Saturday lying in the grass of Washington Park on the 5100 block of South Ellsworth Drive, police said.
Police initially thought Ross suffered a gunshot wound to the back of his head, but an autopsy later revealed he died of brain injuries due to a beating, according to the medical examiner's office.
As of Sunday afternoon, police had opened a homicide investigation into his death.
There were no witnesses to the crime, police said.
