A 19-year-old man shot in the knee earlier this month died after he developed an infection while being treated, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
His death was ruled a homicide.
Darrell Austin, of the 9500 block of South Colfax Avenue, was shot about five blocks north of his home on Colfax Avenue on Nov. 9, according to police.
He ran home, called police, and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 5:19 p.m. Tuesday.
An autopsy Wednesday ruled Austin’s death a homicide and listed sepsis and bronchopneumonia as contributing factors.
Sepsis is an “illness in which the body has a severe response to bacteria or other germs,” according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine.
Nobody has been charged in connection with the shooting, police said tonight.
