Prep sports profile: Mamie Tabet

Stepping up her training in the offseason, Evanston Township runner Mamie Tabet has become a role model for her teammates by logging one of the team’s top mile totals. Head coach Zach Herrmann said that her improved performance is setting Tabet up for a breakthrough year.

“I think at one point during last season Mamie made the decision to become a better runner,” Herrmann said. “It’s been incredibly exciting for the coaches to see how that decision has translated into how she has approached her training. The girls have taken note of her commitment and work ethic, which has already had a tangible impact on the team.”

How long have you run cross country?

I’ve run since I was in about fifth grade, but I officially joined the team my sophomore year.

What do you love most about cross country?

Running has become a defining part of my day, whether I’m in season or not. I love how easy it is to do on your own, but also how important it is during the season to recognize how much of a team sport it is.

What are your goals for next season? How will you achieve them?

My main goal is to beat my personal record from last season, but also to go out with a bang, meaning making this last season the best yet. I want to continue to embrace the “family” aspect of our cross country team by supporting my teammates on and off the course and pushing myself by keeping in mind these races will unfortunately be my last of high school.

How do you motivate yourself to train during the summer?

Training during the summer consistently has become attainable through goal setting and using other teammates. This year, I co-created a spring running club that met three times a week with the goal of keeping runners in shape out of season. My coach also created a group of 12 girls called “It Takes 12,” with a specific plan of 12 steps to having a successful season. Much of this focused on the way we spent our time during the offseason, which included running a 300-mile summer.

Who has inspired you most in your athletic endeavors?

My coach Zachary Herrmann. His passion for not only running, but his strong belief in giving everything your personal best has rubbed off on everyone around him.

If you didn’t run cross country, what would you be doing?

I would love to start a cooking blog.

What’s the best part about summer in Evanston?

Without a doubt, the beach.

Who is your favorite athlete and why?

I volunteer at the Special Olympics; the athletes there inspire me with their commitment, drive and enthusiasm.

How do you beat the heat during workouts?

Beating the heat is made a lot easier with practice at 6:30 a.m. every weekday, but on the weekends I love to run at dusk.
