What they are: Fundraising cookbooks from community organizations like the Hinsdale Junior Woman's Club and the Junior League of Chicago have a long history. Buyers feel good spending money on them, because they know the proceeds benefit local projects. And readers love them, because they provide a wonderful snapshot in time of the way "real people" are cooking and eating. Typically, the recipes are carefully tested and come from local contributors. That's true of both of these books. Some recipes in "Peeling the Wild Onion," like the Frango Mint chocolate cookies, come from chefs or local institutions.
