In a battle of two sitting Republican congressmen, 34-year-old freshman Rep. Adam Kinzinger has apparently topped veteran Rep. Donald Manzullo.
With 99 percent of the unofficial vote counted, Kinzinger had 56 percent to 44 percent for Manzullo.
Speaking to reporters, Manzullo said he wasn’t used to a “Chicago style” negative campaign.
Manzullo found his previous Rockford district split in half and opted to run in the new 16th, which cuts a rough ‘L’ shape, starting at the Wisconsin border at South Beloit, running south along Interstate 39 to La-Salle Peru at Interstate 80 and then heading southeast through Pontiac and Dwight to the Indiana border. Kinzinger opted to challenge Manzullo after he was mapped by Democrats into the 2nd District held by Democratic U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr.
