Former Ald. Lawrence Bloom (5th) leaves the Dirksen U.S. Courthouse after pleading guilty to corruption Dec. 4, 1998 in Chicago. Bloom, who once proclaimed "I will not be bought", was caught in the government investigation called "Silver Shovel." He admitted to accepting $14,000 in bribes from an FBI mole in exchange for repeated attempts to help the convicted felon and mob associate get a rock-crushing site in the alderman's lakefront ward. Bloom served six months in a federal prison.
