Astros sign ex-Cub closer Veras to minor league deal

The Houston Astros signed right-handed reliever Jose Veras to a minor league contract on Sunday.

Veras, the Astros' former closer, started this season with the Chicago Cubs.

Veras, 33, was released by Chicago last Tuesday. He allowed 12 earned runs in 13 1/3 innings with no saves. He lost the closer job after blowing his first two saves opportunities of the season.

The Cubs still owe Veras the remainder of his $4 million deal for the season.

Veras saved 19 games for the Astros last year before he was dealt to the Detroit Tigers last summer. In Detroit, he served in a set-up role. He had a 3.20 ERA in 19 2/3 innings with the Tigers.

For his career, Veras is 19-23 with 26 saves and a 3.99 ERA. He has also played with the New York Yankees, Cleveland Indians, Miami Marlins, Pittsburgh Pirates and Milwaukee Brewers.
