An East Hyde Park man is charged with aggravated battery to a child against a 3-week-old girl who has now died, authorities said.
Jose Garcia, 28, was ordered held in lieu of $400,000 bail in a hearing midday today before Cook County Criminal Court Judge Donald Panarese Jr., according to court records. Rachel Garcia was pronounced dead at Comer Children’s Hospital at 1:30 p.m. today, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
Police were called to the Garcias’ home in the 5100 block of South Hyde Park Boulevard about 2:45 p.m. Saturday after someone called authorities and paramedics arrived to find the girl not breathing, according to police. The girl was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital in critical condition, police said.
Detectives determined Garcia shook the girl repeatedly, causing severe trauma, police said.
DNAInfo.com reports prosecutors said in a hearing today that Garcia had been caring for the girl, his daughter, at home, and repeatedly threw her in the air until he realized she had become unresponsive. At Comer, doctors found Rachel was suffering from brain hemorrhaging, according to DNAInfo.com.
Garcia turned himself in to police at his home about 10 p.m. Sunday, according to police.
Garcia is a paramedic, DNAInfo.com said, citing a police report.
An autopsy on Rachel's body is scheduled for Wednesday.
Garcia is due back in court March 10.
