A former Naperville North High School counselor and track coach pleaded guilty today to one count of criminal sex abuse involving a student, according to DuPage County prosecutors.
John Carbonaro, 35, of Warrenville, agreed to the plea just before his bench trial was scheduled to begin in DuPage County court.
He was arrested in February 2011 after officials were notified that Carbonaro and a female student under 18 were allegedly involved in a relationship. The school contacted prosecutors, according to the school district.
As part of the plea, Carbonaro admitted touching the girl inappropriately at his residence during the summer 2010.
“As a trusted member of the high school’s staff, Mr. Carbonaro used his position to sexually abuse his young victim,” State’s Atty. Robert Berlin said. “He cared nothing for his victim and betrayed the trust placed in him by the victim, the school and the victim’s parents.”
Carbonaro was suspended after the allegations came to light. He had taught at Naperville North since 2006.
He will be sentenced Feb. 19, and could face a one to three-year prison term, though probation is also an option.Copyright © 2015, CT Now
