Edgewater Medical Center on Chicago's North Side has been closed for more than a decade, but a Tribune/WGN-TV investigation in September found that confidential medical files were scattered throughout the vacant main building. Despite the use of security guards, there had been several break-ins, leaving Social Security numbers and other sensitive patient information vulnerable to potential theft.
A month after the Tribune/WGN investigation, a judge approved the destruction of thousands of old medical records that remained at the medical center, which closed in 2001.
