Newly resurgent <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="ORGOV0000005" title="Democratic Party" href="/topic/politics-government/democratic-party-ORGOV0000005.topic">Democrats</a> hoped to wipe away the negative images that began taking shape in 1968 when <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="EVHST000189" title="Vietnam War (1955-1975)" href="/topic/unrest-conflicts-war/wars-interventions/vietnam-war-%281955-1975%29-EVHST000189.topic">Vietnam War</a> protesters clashed with police in the streets and parks of Chicago as the party convened at the International Amphitheater.
