State's Atty. Richard Daley seems at home during hymns sung by the New Hope Missionary Baptist Church choir in February 1983. An aversion to the limelight marked Daley's campaign style in 1983 from the day of his surprise announcement to run the previous November. Daley seemed most comfortable greeting voters one-on-one with a grin and a handshake. More than Mayor Jane Byrne and as much as U.S. Rep. Harold Washington (D., Ill), the third major Democratic candidate, Daley concentrated on old-fashioned political stumping.
