A woman who was walking away from a crash on I-55 was struck by a vehicle and thrown into oncoming traffic this evening in DuPage County, according to Illinois State police officials.
The incident happened about 5:26 p.m. on the I-55 southbound lanes north of Woodward Avenue, near the DuPage and Will County border, police said.
The incident began as an Illinois State trooper was handling an unrelated crash just south of Woodward Avenue on the inside shoulder, police said.
A woman in her 20s was walking from the crash scene at that location toward the trooper's vehicle when a third vehicle traveling southbound near the crash location first struck the center median wall and then the woman, police said.
The impact caused the woman to be thrown into the northbound lanes of I-55, police said. She was not struck by northbound traffic, police said. The vehicle that hit her continued southbound and struck the trooper's vehicle with the trooper inside, police said.
The woman was taken in serious condition to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, police said.
The trooper was treated and released from a local hospital, police said. The 36-year-old driver of the vehicle that struck the woman was taken to a local hospital for evaluation.
All lanes were reopened as of 8:30 p.m. Police are investigating the collision.Copyright © 2015, CT Now
