April 12, 1954: Lois Mellquist, right, nurse at Argonne National Laboratory, shows Argonne's newly-developed portable X-ray unit to Betty Van Dolah, a Medical Technologist. The unit is small, inexpensive and does not require an electrical power supply. Exclusive of irradiation charges, the total cost of the first model was $40. It provides rays which are comparable in energy to a 100,000 volt X-ray machine.
