Three men were killed and at eight other people wounded in shootings across the city between Friday afternoon and early Saturday, from the Old Irving Park neighborhood on the Northwest Side to the South Chicago neighborhood near Lake Michigan.
The 34-year-old man killed in the South Chicago neighborhood late Friday was pronounced dead at Advocate Trinity Medical Center about midnight after someone shot him just after 11 p.m. in the 8700 block of South Burley Avenue.
The Cook County medical examiner's office identified the man as Kevin Sanders, 34, of the 8900 block of South Mackinaw Avenue. He lived near where he was killed.
Police said the man they arrested in connection with the shooting, who also had been shot, ran to an apartment of a family friend in a nearby building in the same complex.
Police said his girlfriend's car windows were smashed with a walker near where the shooting happened. About 100 people surrounded the front door of the apartment where he holed up, shouting threats and throwing rocks and bottles.
Police hustled the wounded suspect into an ambulance that had backed up to the door and took him to Advocate Trinity Hospital with a squad car both in front of and behind the ambulance.
About 2:45 a.m., a 19-year-old man was shot and killed while standing on the sidewalk in the 3300 block of West Beach Avenue in the Humboldt Park neighborhood on the West Side.
Jonathan Santiago, of the 900 block of North Homan Avenue, was pronounced dead at 3:12 a.m. at Norwegian-American Hospital, according to the medical examiner's office.
Police said two males emerged from a gangway and shot him in the chest.
About 2:40 a.m., three people were shot - one fatally - in the 4200 block of West Irving Park Road in the Old Irving Park neighborhood on the Northwest Side.
Killed was 19-year-old Miguel Cancel, of the 5100 block of North Parkside Avenue, according to the medical examiner's office. Cancel was pronounced dead at 9:05 a.m. at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, according to the medical examiner's office.
Cancel and a 19-year-old woman and a 22-year-old man were shot when someone stepped out of a vehicle while the they were stopped at a light and shot into their car, police said.
The trio drove to Norwegian-American Hospital but Cancel and the other man were later taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, Cancel with wounds to his head and right shoulder and the 22-year-old with wounds to both thighs.
The woman remained at Norwegian with a wound to her right arm.Police said the three people who were shot and the shooters identify with separate gangs, neither of which have strongholds in the area.
About 3:35 a.m., a 31-year-old man was shot in the back in the 8000 block of South Union Avenue in the Gresham neighborhood on the South Side, police said. The man was standing on a sidewalk when he was approached by another male who fired the shots.
About 3 a.m. in the Logan Square neighborhood, a male whose age wasn't available was shot in the hip in the 1600 block of North Humboldt Boulevard. Additional information about that shooting wasn't immediately available.
Earlier Friday, three people were shot in the 6100 block of South Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and walked into the University of Chicago hospital with wounds they're expected to survive.Copyright © 2015, CT Now
