A 14-year-old boy was shot and wounded overnight near a public high school on the Southwest Side, police said.
The boy was approached by three young men wearing white around 7:50 p.m. in the 7600 block of South Homan Avenue in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood, police said. One of the men shot the boy in the back.
The boy was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he was being treated.
The shooting occurred next to the Sarah E. Goode Academy, a public high school that specializes in science, technology, engineering and math.
The boy's mother, Carmelita Rice, told reporters at the hospital that her son was passing the school after walking two girls home when the young men confronted him and asked if he belonged to a gang. Her son said no, but the men started punching him and one of them pulled a gun, Rice said.
Her son was shot in the back as he ran away, she said.
"I think it's cowardly to shoot somebody in the back," Rice said. "He's 14 years old. . .I hope you get caught."
She said her son attends Ralph Ellison High School, about 2 1/2 miles from where he was shot.
The boy was among five people wounded in shootings across Chicago Thursday afternoon through the night.
• A 34-year-old man was found fatally shot near a shuttered public school in the Fernwood neighborhood Thursday afternoon. He was attacked in the 10400 block of South Perry Avenue just after 1 p.m., according to Police News Affairs Officer Daniel O'Brien.
Police responded to a call of a person shot and found the man lying in the street unresponsive, O'Brien said. Preliminary reports indicated the man may have been shot in a robbery or robbery attempt, but that could not be confirmed.
The man was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he died at 2:59 p.m. The Cook County medical examiner's office identified him as Brian Rollins, of the 0-100 block of West 105th Street.
Police had no detailed description of the attacker or any information about which way the attacker fled. The shooting took place on a block where Kohn Elementary School closed this year.
• Later Thursday afternoon, around 5:10 p.m., three men were shot in the 7100 block of South Rockwell Street, O'Brien said.
The three were on the street when someone came up and opened fire, O'Brien said. A man or boy was seen being taken away by police following the shooting, but it was not known if he was a suspect.
A 19-year-old man and a 23-year-old man were taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, O'Brien said. A third man, 35, was treated at Holy Cross Hospital.
The shooting took place at the same place where a 4-year-old girl, Khalise Weatherspoon, was shot July 29, and area residents said at least some of those who were the targets of Thursday's shooting were also among those targeted when Khalise was shot. Three people have been charged in her shooting.
