• Police shot and seriously wounded a woman who they say pointed a gun toward them in a Pilsen alley. A group of people called 911 after the woman aimed a gun at them in the 1000 block of West Cullerton Street about 10:30 p.m. Thursday, police said. Read more

A security guard at Thornwood High School in South Holland died after falling against a locker while trying to break up a fight at the school, police said. Paramedics responded to the school at 17101 S. Park Ave. in the south suburb early Thursday afternoon and found Richard Cowser unconscious. Cowser, 54, was taken to Ingalls Hospital in Harvey and pronounced dead at 1:33 p.m., police said. Read more

Charges have been filed against an 18-year-old man accused of shooting a 15-year-old in the leg during a robbery outside Roosevelt High School and then hiding the gun in a 9-year-old’s backpack. Kevin Murchison, of the 4700 block of South Greenwood Avenue in the Kenwood neighborhood, is charged with aggravated battery with a firearm, unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, unlawful use of a weapon near a school, child endangerment and attempted armed robbery. Trains on Metra's Union Pacific lines were halted for about 15 minutes following a computer glitch this morning, officials said. The problem occurred around 8:30 a.m. and stopped all trains on the UP Northwest, North and West lines, according to Metra spokesman Tom Miller. Read more

Two men died in separate overnight motorcycle crashes, according to authorities.  David Alvarado, 30, crashed near Melrose Street and Laramie Avenue in the Cragin neighborhood about 9:55 p.m. He was pronounced dead about 10:40 p.m. at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
