The first national tour of the Broadway musical "Beautiful: The Carole King Musical" is to play Chicago for 12 weeks during the 2015-16 holiday period, its New York producers announced Monday.
The show, which stars the Evanston native Jessie Mueller in New York, will play Broadway in Chicago's Oriental Theatre, 24 W. Randolph St., from Dec. 1, 2015 through Feb. 21, 2016. Single tickets are not yet on sale.
The million-dollar question, of course, is whether Mueller, who won the Tony Award for her stellar performance as the singer-songwriter, will make a triumphant homecoming with this show, a casting choice that likely would sell out the Oriental for those 12 weeks and be a poetic conclusion to Mueller's fast rise to fame in New York.
The producers said through a spokesman that no casting had yet been determined. Much likely will depend on how long "Beautiful" runs in New York and, yet more significantly, whether Mueller has another pressing offer thereafter. The dates of the Chicago run are too far off for any of that to be settled.
