'The Immigrant'

To be released by the Weinstein Company (date pending).

In 1921, a Polish immigrant (Marion Cotillard) lands at New York City's Ellis Island and is promptly separated from her consumptive sister and preyed upon by a slippery theatrical impresario (Joaquin Phoenix) of complex motives. Jeremy Renner plays a stage magician who becomes the producer/pimp's rival for the immigrant's affections. A persistent favorite among the French at Cannes for his dramas "Two Lovers," "We Own the Night" and others, James Gray has made his most successfully realized film yet; I never fully bought his brand of studied melodrama until "The Immigrant."
