The budget chief for the Illinois House Republicans has been chosen to fill the vacancy left by the death of Rep. Mark Beaubien.
Kent Gaffney, 44, of Lake Barrington was chosen Thursday night by local political officials, and he said he will run for the office in 2012. He had worked closely with Beaubien, who was the point person for House GOP lawmakers on budget matters. Gaffney served as budget director for the House Republicans for more than a decade.
Gaffney said he is “deeply humbled” to be chosen to follow Beaubien, a longtime friend.
Gaffney and Elizabeth, his wife of 13 years, have two sons.
Beaubien, 68, of Barrington Hills died suddenly June 5. He had been a Republican lawmaker since 1996.
The swearing-in is likely to take place before mid-month in the legislative district.
