Boy, 13, charged with bringing loaded gun to school

Aurora police said Monday they have charged a middle school student who brought a loaded handgun to school.

The 13-year-old boy will appear at a Tuesday hearing in Kane County after he was charged as a juvenile with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, police said. He was scheduled to be transferred to the county’s juvenile center in St. Charles Monday night.

A teacher at Washington Middle School, 231 Constitution Drive, noticed a group of students milling around the boy’s locker around 2:30 p.m. Monday. The teacher and an administrator then searched the boy’s locker and found the gun inside, in a book bag, police said.

The weapon belonged to a family member of the boy, an eighth grader who lives in Aurora. Police said they do not expect to file any additional charges in the incident.
