Anne M. Murphy has been selected as senior vice president of legal affairs and general counsel for Rush University Medical Center. Murphy comes to Rush from the Chicago law firm of Holland & Knight, where she is a partner and chair of the firm¿s Chicago health care and life sciences team. She will begin at Rush on Jan. 1. Murphy will have oversight of all legal services provided for Rush. She will direct the in-house counsel in the Rush Office of Legal Affairs and engage and manage outside attorneys. She replaces Max Brown, who plans to retire from Rush as vice president of legal affairs and general counsel in June. Brown will assist with the transition. Murphy and her team also will be responsible for protecting the rights of employees, faculty and medical trainees by ensuring that Rush is in compliance with all labor laws and regulations. In addition, the general counsel will provide the Board of Trustees, senior staff, faculty and other Rush staff with legal advice on a wide variety of matters. Before joining Holland & Knight, Murphy was senior counsel to the Illinois Attorney General, where she advised on a wide range of legal and policy matters, including high-profile legislative and enforcement initiatives in the health care arena. She also was chief counsel for the Illinois Department of Public Health, serving as the agency¿s privacy officer and ethics officer. Murphy also served as vice president for health law and litigation at the American Medical Association and as a partner and the practice leader for the health law department at the Chicago law firm of Vedder, Price, Kaufman & Kammholz, where she represented a wide range of health care clients. Murphy has a J.D. from Boston University School of Law and B.A. from Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine.
