In 2005, Campbell Soup Supply Company recalled 473,500 pounds of Spaghettios Plus Calcium nationwide for undeclared soy. No allergic reactions were reported.
The firm said the product contained meatballs made with soy protein that were not listed on the ingredients label. "Following the recall we implemented several changes to prevent mislabeling," Campbell spokesman Anthony Sanzio said. This included "can code-recognition systems on all of our North American thermally processed labeling lines. We also have installed bar code readers on all labelers in our North American facilities."
The Tribune investigation found that on average, five products are recalled each week for undeclared allergens.
